Although the title of ThuyLoan Tonnby's exhibition is "Horsepower" and the subject matter is: the thrill of the chase, the rush to the finish, the power of speed, the works themselves cause the viewer to stand still; stop and stare. They capture a moment of time.

Formula 1 - 2008

In "Formula 1" the roar of the engines comes with the view, we are at the bending that corner, will we make it or will we loose, we are left curious and frightened of the drama of that instance. Yet we stop and stare, wanting more, as the protagonist of our own life's drama and daily competition.

Horse racing in the snow - 2008

In "Horseracing in the snow" the viewer can hear the hoofs as they pound across the snow, that single moment of exhilaration sweetened by the bite of a crisp winter day. The senses are stirred.

we have the cut of form against matter, the spray of water, the split second of spray foam which we lose in the moment we recognize it. The viewer, like the figure in David Hockney's "A Bigger Splash" is overwhelmed by the exuberance of the composition and the realization of his own inability to hold the moment. But that's what we want to do; hold the moment and that's what ThuyLoan does so well for us.
